Protect and hydrate your skin in winter

Did you know that winter weather can bring profound changes in your skin? During these months you skin is bombarded by dry indoor heating, cold, harsh weather and wind. Even oily skin can become dehydrated. More than ever, you skin needs to be replenished and protected. Just as you don't leave home without wearing proper clothing, you shouldn't start or end the day without proper skin protection.

What should you use?

Luckily there is an array of wonderful products available in many different formulations and at many price points. You can find them in pharmacies, department stores, drug stores and skin clinics.

Start with products that re-hydrate and repair dry skin - particularly those that contain hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is effective in hydrating skin, restoring natural barriers and plumping up fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, you'll also want to use products containing antioxidants Vitamin C and E to protect your skin against the free radicals that cause premature aging.

If you have irritated, sensitive skin or suffer from rosacea or eczema, try products with a non-clogging moisturizer that soothe and protect against the elements.

Oily and acne skin can still become dehydrated in winter or through over use of products that strip the skin of natural oils. There are wonderful serums available that replenish without thick, heavy ingredients and provide immediate and long term moisture back into skin.

If you're experiencing extreme dryness, such as cracking, you'll need to look into some intensive treatments. Try using products that restore the balance of ceramide and other natural lipids found in the skin. These creams are ideal for tough-to-treat areas like elbows and knees. Eczema sufferers can use these special products wherever needed to replenish and protect their delicate skin.

A common skin condition that tends to worsen during the winter months is keratosis pilaris(KP) or "chicken skin." Characterized by small, rough bumps that resemble goose bumps, KP most commonly appears on the backs of the arms but can show up anywhere except the palms and soles of the feet. This build up of rough dead skin needs to be exfoliated.

Other good measures to protect your skin include taking shorter baths and showers and avoid using extremely hot water. Drinking lots of healthful fluids. And trying an indoor humidifier to add moisture into your home.

Don't let your winter dry skin worsen over the long, cold months. Use products that are targeted to your condition and keep your skin clear,and hydrated all season long.
