What's in a Budget?

Having a solid budget is the key to your financial freedom and a future filled with possibilities because you have planned well. So if you keep putting off creating a budget because you think it's going to clip your wings, shake the dust off that outdated thinking and get with today's financial program. A budget is your guide to save enough money to buy the things you want, splurge on the vacations you need, and own the things you deserve.

First, be sure it is your budget. Don't just download some form online and try to fill in the blanks. Think about the costs that you incur every day, every month, and every year. Also consider where you want to be in five years, and how much money that will cost you. Take the time to write out your hopes, ambitions, and dreams-and put them into your budget. What kind of home do you want? Do you want a vacation share, or would you like your own cottage? Or, would you rather travel in your spare time? Knowing what kinds of things you'd like in your life tomorrow can tell you how to spend and save your money today.

Be accurate when you project your income. If you're currently unemployed, how realistic is it that you'll be hired back? Are you in a boom-and-bust employment cycle where you can anticipate temporary layoffs each year? Can you make up for those layoffs with overtime? Knowing how you make your money can sometimes be as important as knowing how much. Set your living standard based on the lowest income month you expect-not on the bonuses, overtime, or other occasional infusions you might receive over the year.

Don't forget those unexpected expenses. Is your budget never accurate? Have you accounted for all those extras like the dentist visits, annual insurance premiums, taking the dog or cat to the vet, or other costs that only come up once or twice a year? A budget doesn't have to be fixed in stone. Work irregular costs into your monthly budget, and set that money aside into a savings account.

Review your budget regularly. Even when your budget is working well for you, review it regularly. You may want to incorporate new categories, or your goals and ambitions may change-hey-you may even get a raise and want to buy something special to celebrate.

Finally, a positive attitude and the desire to take charge of your financial future are key ingredients to achieving the things that you want in your future.
